The Big Mountain Highway and the Monte Cristo Highway are scheduled to close for the winter beginning at midnight on Monday.

Both alpine highways, along with others in the state, receive extremely heavy snowfall, and the cost to keep them open during winter is prohibitive.

The Utah Department of Transportation said the Big Mountain Highway, State Road 65, will close between milepost 3, just north of the Emigration Canyon turnoff, and milepost 14, about a mile south of East Canyon Reservoir.

The Monte Cristo Highway, State Route 39, will close between milepost 37 at the Ant Flat Road area east of Huntsville, and milepost 56 near Woodruff.

UDOT has already closed several other seasonal roads including Guardsman Pass (State Road 224 from Park City to Midway); State Road 190 from Big Cottonwood Canyon to Park City; and the American Fork/Alpine Loop (State Road 92).

Road condition information is available through UDOT's free smart-phone app or online at utdottraffic.utah.gov or by calling 866-511-UTAH.
